Changing Page Layouts: When and Why

So you have chosen a template and you’re building a Web site. Then you realize that you don’t like the structure of one of your pages. Never fear. Although you can’t change the template of your site, you can alter the setup of specific pages by assigning new page layouts.

DM2 layoutsChanging the page layout is easy. Simply click on the “site tree" button, then click on the “edit” button next to the page you would like to change. Click on the “new layout” tab, then select one of the options listed below. Give the layout a new name and hit “add.” That’s it.

In addition to aesthetic reasons, there are also practical reasons for doing this. Let’s say you’ve created a page on which you want users to click on a side menu; a good way to do this is to remove the site map from the top of the page. The fastest, easiest way to do this is to select a new layout for that page that has no site menu.

Another option is to use the “new layout” feature to make a copy of the layout you were using previously. The structure of your page would remain the same, but the actual layout would technically be different. For some templates, you can dictate which menu appears along the top of the page. All you need to do is create a new menu with nothing in it. Then set the site map menu to display the blank menu. Viola. No more site map!

Remember; whenever you switch to a new layout, you must often re-insert logos, images, copy, menus and ads onto the page. This issue may be addressed in future DM2 updates.
