Colorful Possibilities

DM2 colorsA smart color scheme can be the difference between a good Web site and a great site. Picking a good color scheme isn’t always easy; in fact, this was regularly my greatest obstacle after moving from journalism to Web publishing. The good news is you don’t have to endure the same hardships I did when contemplating colors.

DM2 color schemesDM2 offers preset color swatches for people who can‘t decide on color schemes. Or, you can simply do what I did, which is pick out your artwork before choosing your site colors. It’s a common tactic in the newspaper business; take the most eye-catching color from your dominant photo or graphic, then use that color -- or shades of that color -- to accentuate your site. You can even pick out a couple of colors to use from your dominant artwork.

Side note: the “dominant art” is typically the largest, most central visual element on your page; if you can’t find the dominant art among all of your images, then you should probably reconsider your choice of graphics.

Choosing your site colors based on image colors is a fast, easy way to build a good-looking site. And if you’re still in doubt, you can still use the DM2 color swatches.
